Arbor Day

Erica presenting Arbor Day is an international program to celebrate trees. LAVGC partners with Alden Lane Nursery, the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, and Davey Tree Expert Company to celebrate California's Arbor Day with an educational school program. California's Arbor Day is actually a whole week. A California State resolution in 2011 proclaimed March 7-14 as California Arbor Week.

LAVGC volunteers participate in two ways:
Each participating school receives a Penny Pines Certificate identifying a plantation in a California National Forest donated in their honor. Financial support for these certificates comes from Alden Lane Nursery, the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, and Davey Tree Expert Company.

Note: The pandemic has changed how the public schools choose to integrate programs from outside groups into their school days. Fewer schools have been interested in having our volunteers give presentations. LAVGC will be exploring different ways of helping the school children to learn about Arbor Day.

Participation

This activity is open to all LAVGC members. No experience is necessary. The Arbor Day chairperson will train volunteers as needed.

Meeting times

See the newsletter for information about when LAVGC volunteers are needed for Arbor Day activities. About a month before Arbor Day the LAVGC Arbor Day committee chair will request volunteers to help prepare the packets to be given to the school children and give Arbor Day talks at the elementary schools.
